Diversity in Children’s Literature: Grades 2-8 with Cindy Rodriguez

Why do we need to diversify our book collections? Cindy will discuss the efforts that have been made by publishers and what teachers, parents, and librarians can do to help.
She will address how to get started with diversifying your collection, starting with a bookshelf inventory. She will also provide resources for attendees, offer some specific recommendations, and will have some books to give away!

Cindy L. Rodriguez is the author of the YA novel When Reason Breaks, (Bloomsbury 2015) and the essay “I’m a Survivor” from the anthology Life Inside My Mind: 31 Authors Share Their Personal Struggles (Simon Pulse 2018). She is also a founder of and blogger at Latinxs in Kid Lit, which has been celebrating children’s literature by/for/about Latinxs since 2013. She has presented at numerous local, state, and national literary festivals and conferences about reading, teaching, and children’s literature and is currently a middle school reading specialist in West Hartford, Connecticut.
